QDM, or Quality Deer Management, has become all the rage among serious deer hunting sportsmen. I will cover more in-depth aspects of QDM in future posts but for a quick run down QDM started out in the mid 1980's by a few biologists and scientists working in conjunction with a couple seed companies. They started out with the idea that if they could improve the nutritional requirements of deer on a year round basis this would produce healthier deer and bigger antlered bucks. They were right and this once little known deer hunting management idea has been growing leaps and bounds, no pun intended, since the mid 1990's. There are now several companies devoted solely to producing clovers, vitamins, and other products for the deer hunting sportsman who wants to plant a few acres of this very high protein, palatable and nutritious food for deer. And any deer hunting sportsman can move into QDM with a modest investment and enough land to make the effort worthwhile. While you can get into QDM with as little as 20 to 40 acres of land the more land you own or lease the better.
